Their Eyes Were Watching God is one of the classics in Afro American literary history by Hurston, one of the fa- mous Afro American female writers. The theme of "striving for freedom and identity" is widely explored both in China and abroad. The concept of Liberty by Erich Fromm provides us an proper angle to see the blind spots and shortcomings of the characterization in the text. Jenny is floating between freedom and responsibility, freedom and morality, freedom searching and escape, which reflects Hurston' s nonplus in her exploration of the goal of the value of female existence.
