Semi-colonial modernism can be discerned not only in literature of Beijing and Shanghai prior to the Anti-Japanese War and in Zhang Ailing' s novels during the Anti-Japanese War but also in the literary arena of Beijing in the period of the Anti-Japanese War. In addition to the staunch resistance of the Chinese troops at front and rear battlefields which prevented the Japanese aggressors from utterly controlling the literary arena of Beijing culturally, unofficial scholars of Beijing exposed to western modernism had also striven to preserve semi-colonial modernism in then Beijing. Moreover, even official scholars such as Zhou Zuoren and Shen Qiwu, etc. who were deeply rooted in their semi-colonial modernism, could not keep up with the pace of cultural colonization of Japanese Jingoism.
