Cormac McCarthy sets up co -ordinations between Americanness and transnationality in his re - conception of the West, deconstruction of the racial/cultural integrity of his characters, and deployment of dual borders. His participation in and transgression of the genre of Western American fiction through invoking yet modifying its conventional elements to provide a critical index to modern America in its relationality to other nations not only speaks to the utility and richness of the genre but also illustrates his originality as well as ability to respond to chan- ges in American culture. This model of interpretation suggests that transnational American studies can go beyond ethnic or diasporic writers, and can therefore be expanded in its scope of application to transnational literature in general.
