The serum or plasma levels of gastrin (GAS), motilin (MOT) and somatostatin (SS) in 28 children with deferred or chronic diarrhea on an empty stomach and 1 h after having test breakfast, before treatment and at their recovery stages from illness were determined by radioimmunoassay and compared with those in 22 normal controls. The correlation analysis among the three gastrointestinal hormones were done respectively. The results showed that the serum or plasma levels of GAS, MOT and SS after having test breakfast were obviously higher than those on an empty stomach in the children with diarrhea before treatment, at their recovery stages and in normal controls ( P <0 01). The levels of serum GAS and plasma MOT before and after meal and the plasma levels of SS on an empty stomach in the children with diarrhea before treatment were higher than those at their recovery stages from illness and those of normal controls ( P <0 05, 0 01), but there was no significant difference in the plasma levels of SS after meal ( P >0 05). The values of GAS/SS and MOT/SS in the children with diarrhea before treatment were increased obviously with the difference being significant between those at their recovery stages from illness and those of normal controls ( P <0 05, 0 01). The positive correlation was found between GAS and SS and between MOT and SS in the children at their recovery stages from illness and in normal controls, but there was no correlation in children with diarrhea. The results indicated that the secretive disorders of GAS, MOT and SS may be the important factors causing diarrhea for a long time.
