This paper discusses the novel NI Huan-zhi by YE Sheng-tao. It especially deals with the problem of modernity. Not only the restlessness of the hero NI Huan-zhi is connected with modern transformation of Chinese society, but also the unity of Chinese culture as the inner base of Chinese poetry is questioned during the process of modernization. Based on this discussion, this paper studies the social-cultural reasons why the novel instead of poetry held the dominating status of literature in early 20th century China. The study compares China and Germany in their modern aspects, and it proposes that both nations, though different in history, are under similar conditions confronted with modern transformation.
