通过分析《了不起的盖茨比》一书中具体实例,阐释了作者Fitzgerald频繁使用时间词语的主要原因,并得出如下结论:时间的安排不仅为故事的发展提供了最佳背景,烘托了情节的戏剧效果,而且时间本身就是此书主题的一部分,即任何人都无法创造一个可以由自己左右的过去。
This article sets out to explain the unusual phenomenon of Fitzgerald抯 high frequent use of time words. Through detailed analysis of the most typical examples, it is concluded that the time words not only identify the time of the specific actions, but play a much more important role. Firstly, time effectively corresponds to the development of the story. Secondly, Fitzgerald抯 skillful use of double vision, flashbacks and juxtaposition connects time with setting and action to create dramatic effects. Thirdly, time itself is part of the theme in this novel. Fitzgerald uses a series of symbols to expose the main theme, that is, the impossibility of creating a manageable past out of the immense present, even with the sufficient wealth, which is just the source of Gatsby抯 tragedy.
