摘要 The Great Gatsby mainly describes a story and in this story Gatsby have a love affair with a girl named Daisy so that he can have the chance to enter the sophisticated, money world of the world he likes and he has made all efforts to gain a lot of money. Actually, the main theme of Great Gatsby focuses on the corruption of the American Dream. All characters in this novel have an illusion of American Dream and they all hope to make money through different ways. (Fitzgerald, F,2000)The false values of material which is hold by the Jazz generation are examined by reality finally. Things themselves are not always what we see from their surface. Sometimes we will be fooled by the masks that people wear in daily life and are obsessed by illusion. In the novel of Great Gatsby, there is a big difference between the nature of these characteristics and the appearance of themselves. This novel aims to describe the nature of people in 1920's and their fake life in Jazz Age. Therefore, most people live in the life with a conflict between illusion and reality. In a word, people are faced with the conflict between the illusion of American Dream and the real society which they are in. (Lehan, 1991)
