Objective To investigate the effect of diabetes and glycemic control on salivary function in patients with diabetes. Methods Thirty eight patients with type 2 diabetes and thirty one nondiabetic control participated (age range,53-78 years) in the present study.Diabetic status was determined by a glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA 1C ) test and a 2-hour glucose tolerance test.Poor glycemic control was defined as HbA 1C >8%.Unstimulated whole saliva and stimulated whole saliva rates on chewing medical paraffin were measured,The concentration and total value of immunoglobulins in mix saliva were examined, and subjects completed a standardized xerostomia questionnaire. Results Patients with poorly controled diabetes had lower stimnlated whole saliva flow rates than those with well controled diabetes and nondiabetic control subjects. There were no significant differences in saliva, totle protein IgA IgG IgM and xerostomic complains based on glycemic control status. Conclusion These results provide some evidence that pooly controled diabetes may be associated with salivary dysfunction in older adults.
