As a new summary measure of population health in the World Health Report 2000, WHO initiated disability-adjusted life expectancy (DALE) to assess the health performance in all member countries. DALE is a general term for health expectancy that estimates equivalent years of good health status. Sullivan method is applied to compute DALE value using data from country life table and severity-weighted disability prevalence. WHO believed that DALE should be more appropriate for population health assessment. Many potential applications of DALE were mentioned in the paper.
