In Dante's Commedia, there is a common phenomenon, that is, the souls have the appearances and the characters of bodies. For this an interpretation has been given in Purgatorio 25. According to it, souls, having been separated from bodies, acquire new bodies made up of by the air near them. It is through these bodies that the souls can be touched. The interpretation, however, proves to be false, since it fails to notice that the "corporality" of souls has experienced a gradual change throughout the journey of the pilgrim. As the essay argues, both the idea of the corporality of souls and the interpretation in Purgatorio 25 originate from a conversation between Jesus and Jews in John 6. There the Jews who do not believe God read the words of Jesus literally and ignore the allegorical teaching of him. Accordingly, they can only see the flesh of Jesus and refuse to recognize his divine nature. It is from the perspective of John that the "eorporality" of souls in the Commedia be considered as a theological satire for sacrilegiousness. And the dying out of that "corporality" , then, is a sign of conversion.
