John Updike' s Rabbit Tetralogy shows his subtle examination on the religious faith in American society, and describes Rabbit' s life long quest for the sacred, as well. Through the depiction of the conflict between traditional religious faith and Rabbit' s religiosity, the author exhibits his regret on the declining or the withering of traditional religion, and his ambivalence upon the predica- ment of the ordinary people in the process of religious evolution. What Updike implies is to pull the sacred and the secular from their extremeness towards the middle, to integrate the sacred with the secular, to rebalance the relationship between the visible and the in- visible.
