"逃遁"是美国文学的一个传统主题。厄普代克的"兔子四部曲"以极其细腻的笔墨刻画出一个"逃遁"型人物的典型形象。他的"逃遁"主要是徘徊在几个女性之间,其动机、行为充满了实用主义色彩。是美国的文化背景以及个人主义倾向的真实写照。
In Tetralogy of Rabbit, Rabbit is escaping throughout his life and he feels extremely bewildered. However, it can be seen that he just escapes among several females. He escapes to whomever beneficial to him, which to the great extent shows his prag- matism. His pragmatism results from American culture and his own individualism. Besides, it has something to do with the author, also a pragmatist.
