Ian McEwan's novels present ethical conflicts and dilemmas which the people in western world (especially in the modern British society) face, and reflect profoundly ethical problems such as good and evil, transvestite, child abuse, sadism and masochism, money and politics, and self and altru- ism. On the other hand, the form of his narrative ethics is varied; he mainly uses such ways as revealing the discourse from the characters' mouths, irony, symbolism and choosing narrative perspectives to show his ethical attitude.
