The Australian author Elizabeth Jolley has a world-famous reputation, but unfortunately her name was rarely received in China, and her work The lib// has not earned its worthy concern. Much attention of literary review was paid upon its post-colonial feature. In fact, as a writer of varied and changeable style, Jolley^s work needs analysis in depth, among which the female gothic novel is one of the most representative elements. In use of female non-liner narrative mode, Jolley creates marginal characters like Hester and Kathe~;ine. Different with the traditional gothic novel whose aim is mainly focused on seeking novelty, Jolley concerns more about characters~ gender, status and emotional issues. In the cover of traditional gothic novel, Jolley expresses the dilemma between modern people and the coexistence in the sphere of diverse culture and turns down the authority and rationalism.
