Objective To investigate the association between serum uric acid (SUA) and the risk for arrhythmia in middle- and old-aged women in China by a cross-sectional survey. Methods Women with SUA and Minnesota code of electrocardiogram (ECG), aged above 50 years, were chosen to be study population. The study population was split into three groups: low SUA group, middle SUA group, and high SUA group. OR and Meta-analysis were used to compare arrhythmia risk between SUA groups. Logistic regression and Meta-analysis were applied to compare arrhythmia risk after adjusting for other risk factors of cardiovascular disease (CVD) between SUA groups. Results A total of 2172 people were enrolled in the study. Individuals in the high SUA group had higher arrhythmia risk than those in the middle SUA group (OR: 1.98, 95%CI: 1.12~3.50) and in the low SUA group (OR: 1.73, 95%CI: 1.11~2.71). After adjusting for other CVD risk factors, individuals in the high SUA group still had higher arrhythmia risk than those in the middle SUA group (adjusted OR: 2.36, 95%CI: 1.26~4.39) and in the low SUA group (adjusted OR: 1.80, 95%CI: 1.11~2.90). There was no significant difference in arrhythmia risk in comparing the middle SUA group with the low SUA group (OR: 0.84, 95%CI: 0.55~1.30). Conclusion High SUA level is independently related to arrhythmia in women aged above 50 years in China. Arrhythmia risk will rise when SUA rises.
