Bao Tianxiao not only translated most texts of Chekhov before 1916, but also completed a translation of Ward Six, Chekhov's novel written late in his life with a modernist flavor, which reflected the brand new reading purport and intrest and writing trend. "A Madman" and the leitmotif of the "Awakened" or "Philosopher" vs. "Ordinary Masses" in Bao Tianxiao's translation of Ward Six may arguably have influenced Lu Xun's writing, particularly his "A Madman's Diary". The language adopted in the translation of Ward Six was in a new linguistic style, which effectively and fully expressed the modernist ideas through the translation from the original text. However, Bao Tianxiao as a translator still showed his liberty in his translation, espe- cially in his adaptation of the style of the source text.
