Objective To investigate operation effects of intermittent exotropia. Methods Eighty patients with intermittent exotropia underwent the corrected surgery in our hospital from December 2006 to July 2012 were enrolled. Operation was designed based on age, binocular vision, amblyopic type and degree. The patients were followed up for at least half a year after operation. The operation effects were analyzed. Results The comparisons of operation effects of 80 patients with intermittent exotropia were as follow. ① Divergence excess pattern and basic exodeviation pattern had no significant difference (Х^2 = 0.001, P 〉0.05); divergence excess pattern and convergence insufficiency pattern had significant difference (Х^2 = 4.607, P 〈0.05); basic exodeviation pattern and convergence insufficiency pattern had significant difference (Xz = 5.050, P〈0.05). ②Group 5 to 9 years of age and group 10 to 14 years of age had no significant difference (Х^2 = 0.013, P〉0.05); group 5 to 9 years of age and group over 15 years of age had no significant difference (Х^2 = 0.728, P〉0.05); group 10 to 14 years of age and group over 15 years of age had no significant difference (Х^2 = 0.590, P 〉0.05). ③Significant difference existed between preoperative biocular vision and postoperative biocular vision (Х^2 = 8.025, P〈0.05). Conclusions Operation based on age, binocular vision, amblyopic type, degree and best operation time are suggested for improving the operation effects.
