Based on an examination of two rhyme books and two dictionaries -- the former are revisions and additions made to Libu Yunlue(礼部韵略) while the latter are compiled on the basis ofLibu Yunlue(礼部韵略) -- as well as the earliest available version of Libu Yunlue(礼部韵略) which is preserved in a Japanese temple called Shinpukuji(真福寺), it can be seen that level tone of Ma Yun(麻韵) originated from the version of Libu Yunlue(礼部韵略) written in 1037, and that the rising tone ofMa Xie(马写) and the falling tone ofFeng Ji(祃藉) were derived from Zengxiu Huzhu Libu Yunlue(增修互注礼部韵略) made from 1162 to1223. In light of the place of the development of Ma Ytm(麻韵), it can also be concluded that the so-called Zhongyuan(中原, meaning "Central Plains") at the early stage of modem sound system probably refers to the central plains centered in Pianjing(now Kaifeng).
