摘要
英语句首空间附加语是指具有空间意义且居于句首的句子附加语。从语法结构来讲,这种句子附加语通常为句子中的任选成分,而不是必备成分。从系统功能语言学中的主位结构和信息结构来看,句首空间附加语为有标记主位,通常表达已知信息。因此,在语篇建构过程中,句首空间附加语具有空间设定、语篇衔接、新话题引入、信息对比等语篇功能。然而,一个句首空间附加语往往不只具有一种语篇功能,而是可以同时起到多种语篇建构作用。由于这种空间附加语在句中所处的位置,句首空间附加语在语篇建构中往往可以起到承上启下的桥梁作用。
Clause-initial space adjuncts in English refer to the sentence adjuncts which express spatial meanings and which are at the beginning of a clause. From the viewpoint of grammatical structures, such sentence adjuncts are usually optional elements, rather than obligatory ones. According to the thematic structure and the information structure in Systemic Functional Linguistics, clause-initial space adjuncts are regarded as the marked Theme, and they normally convey given information. As a result, in the process of discourse-structuring, these adjuncts may perform such textual functions as spatial scene- setting, cohesion-maintaining, new topic-introducing, information-contrasting, and so on. However, one clause-initial space adjunct may often perform more than one such textual function at the same time. Therefore, such adjuncts, due to their clause-initial position, can serve as a bridge between what goes previously and what follows as the text is unfolding.
