Willa cather is the first woman writer in American literary history who devoted herself to the portrayal of the frontier life of pioneers in the middle west America.Cather wrote a series of novels set mainly in Nabraska.Among these Nabraska novels are O Pioneers!and My Antonia,Cather's two major novels of the 1910s,which have the women characters as embodying themes concerning female experience.In these two works,Cather's women characters,not limited to the conventional roles as wife and mother,are constantly engaged in the search for their female identity in a male-dominated society.Through the depiction of women characters searching for identity and self-fulfillment and striving to achieve a sense of wholeness,Cather created sucessfully two powerful and heroic pioneer women,Alexandra Bergson and Antonia Shimerda.
