在凯特·肖邦的小说《觉醒》中,女主人公艾德娜的觉醒正是她寻找全新的自我并逐渐释放潜藏的主体意识的过程。小说的开放式结尾渲染了19世纪末的女性在身份建构过程中的悲剧性胜利。通过对比肖邦笔下不同男女角色在社会地位、社会作用方面的差异,分析造成女性身份危机的外部冲突与内在诱因对人们的思想、行为和身份建构的重要影响,从而进一步探寻文学作品、社会变化和女性身份建构三者间的相互作用。
In Kate Chopin＇s The Awakening, Edna Pontellier＇s awakening is the search of her new self and the gradual unleashing of her latent desire. The open ending of this novel represents the tragic victory of the late nineteenth century women in the process of 1heir identity formation. In modern perspective, the conflicts in social context and the stimuli in Edna＇s daily life inspire and ac celerate the heroine＇s self awareness, which embody the interaction among literature, social changes and the female identity construction.
