On the motif of split self, the traditional gothic fiction, assuming the responsibility of moralizing humankind, dichotomizes the characters clearly as 'good' and 'evil'.The modern gothic fiction, however, celebrates humanity and advocates the return of real self;therefore, the self of personae is characterized by neutrality which is termed 'abjection' by Kriestiva.Through the analysis of the short story entitled 'The Temple',the essay tries to illustrate the views on self-identification claimed in the modern gothic fiction.
