Su Tong is a contemporary Chinese writer characterized by his gender narration. His narrations of women' s fate are as admirable as his insights into men' s mind. Such humanistic narrations of his are, however, neither based on the historical and realistic dimensions, which endow humanism with historical connotations, nor based on the metaphysical explorations for the ultimate significance of humanism. His are rather a kind of day-to-day descriptions of gender and destiny, and a perspective of human life and fate through vicissitudes of individuals' lives. Thus he has gone beyond the mainstream norms of the Enlightenment narration established during the last three decades, and turned to focus on the individuals who themselves are part of the history but are turning their back on the main events therein. This has enriched the humanistic poetics beyond the horizon of the Enlightenment literature by revealing part of the true life of ordinary people.
