This essay discusses Harriet Beecher Stowe's characterization of Uncle Tom in the book Uncle Tom’s Cabin through text analysis from the point of social culture and religion. It seeks to present a different idea about the inherent power of Uncle Tom on the basis of people’s misunderstandings concerning Uncle Tom's characters. Firstly, the humanitarianism and his love toward family and society helps to establish his moral integrity, self-respect, firmness, sympathy and wisdom; secondly, the soul of Tom’s belief roots deeply in the native culture of the black people and their own religion which finally contributes to forming a new modified version of Christianity of the white society with a new annotation. It’s not the passive obedience to Christianity of the white society.
