The structure of cognitive category can be found out via language analysis. Using the same unit noun to refer to different animals' gatherings means recategorizing the different animals into a superordinate category. Through retrieving the typical collocations and mutual information scores, we find that "flock" is typically used to refer to the group of birds, "herd" the group of herbivores which have bigger bodies, "pack" the group of omnivores which have smaller bodies, and "swarm" the group of insects. Their typicality has something to do with the hierarchies of animal category, the animal's typicality in the basic category, and cognitive experiences. The study is enlightening to foreign language teaching, and it is helpful to dictionary compiling.
