Non-motorized transport modes, which normally include cycling and walking, are considered to be ecological and sustainable for the advantages of environmental friendly, healthy, good for releasing traf fie congestion and cheap. The governments in the Netherlands have proposed a series of effective policies to promote the development of non-motorized transport modes in the whole country and have wined an in ternational reputation for their advanced and successful non-motorized transport infrastructure. It is concluded that non-motorized transport modes could not replace all kinds of transport modes because they could only play an important role in short-distance journey. It is extremely important to integrate non-mo torized transport modes with other modes especially public transport to establish an appropriate practice strategy and finally develop a sustainable transport system.
