Objective: To investigate the expression of peripheral blood CD4^+CD25^+ regulatory T cells in patients with hepatitis C and its relationship with progression of disease. Methods: Technique of flow cytometry was used to detect peripheral blood CD4^+CD25^+ regulatory T cells of 69 patients with Hepatitis C and 23 controls. Results: The percentage of CD4^+CD25^+ regulatory T cells was significantly higher in patients with hepatitis C than those in healthy controls (P 〈 0. 01 ). The chronic hepatitis C group had a higher percentage of CD4^+CD25^+ regulatory T cells than that of asymptomatic carrier (P 〈 0. 05 ) and the group of patients with liver cirrhosis had a higher percentage of CD4^+CD25^+ regulatory T cells than that of chronic hepatitis C group (P 〈 0.05). Conclusion: Peripheral blood CD4^+CD25^+ regulatory T cells levels are correlated with the progression of HCV infection.
