The ritual of awarding 'pan ' was a religious activity in which the Zhou king awarded sacred meat to subordinates after ancestral worship in the temple. Nevertheless, there have been long and intense debate about the identity of these subordinates. Unearthed bronze inscriptions provide substantial and reliable information to answer this controversial question. Evidence shows the marquis and other nobles who received the awards were not exclusive to the royalfi family. This represents that awarding 'pan ' ritual was a wide-ranging social activity.
