Objective To investigate the effect of angiotensin converting enzyme(ACE) gene insertion/deletion(I/D) polymorphism in the pathogenesis of the idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis(IPF). Methods The ACE gene I/D polymorphism was determined by PCR in 42 IPF patients ( IPF group) and 90 normal controls( control group). Occurrence risk of the individuals with different genetype and allele were analyzed. Results The frequencies of DD genetype and D allele in the IPF group were both higher than those in the control group (P 〈0.05). As compared with II genotype, the individuals with DD genotype and D allele were 2.97 (95 % CI: 1.13 -7.83 ) and 1.96 (95 % CI: 1.16 -3.32 ) times susceptible to IPF, both P 〈 0.05. Conclusions ACE gene I/D polymorphism is associated with the pathogenasis of IPF. The DD genotype and D allele may increase the risk of IPF.
