The principle of arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) is briefly described, and multiple applications in the optical communication are also summarized. AWG have been used for making multichannel transmitters and receivers, tunable and-drop optical filters, and add/drop multiplexers. Their use has led to a novel tech- nique, called spectral slicing, that permits the use of an LED as a low-cost multiwavelength source for local-loop applications.
