An Investigation on English Vocabulary Learning Strategies of Ethnic Minority Students in Xinjiang

摘要 课题组调查了把英语作为第三语言学习的新疆少数民族大学生的词汇学习观念及策略,旨在了解新疆少数民族大学生英语词汇学习策略的总体情况,探讨性别差异对策略选择的影响,并讨论了影响策略选择的主要原因以及对教学的启示。 This paper reports on an investigation of English vocabulary learning strategies employed by Xinjiang ethnic minority college students who are learning English as a third language. The study aimed to explore these EFL learners' overall frequency of strategy use and how gender might affect their strategy choice. The collected questionnaire data from 171 participants indicated that the overall frequency of vocabulary learning strategies employed by these EFL learners was at a moderate level, and recta-cognitive strategies were often used, while affective strategies, cognitive strategies, compensation strategies and so on were sometimes used. The result further demonstrated that there were no significant differences between the male and female participants in all strategies except for the Chinese language reliance strategies. Major factors that may affect the strategy choice and implications of the study were discussed.
