As the oldest genre of the Japanese verse literature, waka makes use of pun and engo, the two most important rhetorical devices. Pun often takes advantage of the dual structure of the modified part : on the surface it is meant to depict a scene or phenomenon, but in reality is used to convey the writer's ideas, his mental activities or feelings. Invented by the Japanese people, engo exploits the co-reference of two or more associated words or phrases to invoke in the reader's mind images that verge on illusion and reality. The device can thus serve the purpose of enhancing expression and enriching the contents and implications of the work. In addition, both pun and engo are often employed along with makurakotoba and joshi to obtain the artistic charms of graciousness, conciseness, subtlety, implicitness and serenity.
