Objective To observe the influence of electroacupuncture at different groups of points on subcutaneous blood flow in the paralyzed limb after L1 spinal cord injury and compare the characteristics of the actions of two groups of points. Methods A model of incomplete L1 spinal cord injury was made by the modified ALLEN's method of producing injury. Electroacupuncture was performed at different groups of points (Governor Vessel point group and Back-Shu point group). A control group and a blank group were established at the same time. Subcutaneous blood flow at Yinlingquan (SP9) in the paralyzed rabbits was measured using a laser Doppler blood flowmeter and a Powerlab 16-channel data acquisition system at 20 min before and at 2 hrs, 7 days and 13 days after the injury. Results Subcutaneous blood flow in the paralyzed limb decreased obviously at 2 hrs after L1 spinal cord injury. Subcutaneous blood flow in the rabbit limb increased obviously in the Governor Vessel point group at 13 days after the injury compared with the Back-Shu point group. There was a statistically significant difference. Conclusion Governor Vessel points have a positive restoring effect on subcutaneous blood flow in the paralyzed limb after lumbar spinal cord injury. The effect is superior to that of Back-Shu points.
