It was widely believed in the Tang and Song Dynasties that the results of imperial examinations (IEs) were predetermined by gods; therefore IEs takers were in dire need of a god controlling IEs and the ruling class needed a god safeguarding IEs. Such a god was finally created during the transitional period from the Song Dynasty to the Yuan Dynasty. He was called Wenchang Zitong Dijun {God of Literature in Zitong of Sichuan}. Originally a minor god in Sichuan, Wenchang Zitong Dijun gradually became a ruler of IEs owing to the joint impact of folk customs, imperial power, social changes and Taoism, which greatly enhanced the position of the theory of "predetermination of results of IEs".
