Relative regulations on fire resistance limit and fire protection for mountain highway tunnels are wanting at present in codes and specifications of highway industry in China. During a fire, continuous collapse or heavy injury should not occur in the tunnel before passengers and crew have enough time to escape and evacuate, and firemen have enough time to rescue and extinguish the fire. After the fire, damages to tunnel structures should be repairable and repair cost and the cost due to interrupted operation should be acceptable. Based on the analysis of various factors affecting fire resistance limit and fire protection as well as current situation in China, author suggests that the fire resistance limit of mountain highway tunnels he 1-2 hours, depending on the stability of the tunnel. According to the stability standard of tunnels, tunnel structure needs not to be protected by a fire resistance layer.
