New York Trilogy can be seen as a quest by Paul Auster for the lost identity of the postmodern people.Through a parody of traditional detective stories,Auster relates the experiences of characters who lose their identity in rootless imagination of themselves,an endless deferred meaning of words,or a quest to be identified by the 'other',and in this way reveals the ambiguity and indefiniteness of people's identity in the postmodern context.
