With the rapid development of cognitive linguistics in the 1980s, the research topics concerned seem to have become a ' star' overnight, like metaphor at present. Many scholars argue that metaphor is based on the mapping across different domains, but how it is mapped is not paid enough attention. Thus, from the viewpoint of mapping, this paper attempts to focus on how metaphor derives from metonymy, i.e. on partial mapping, selection mapping and mapping eonstrual, and then compare it with the typical features of metonymy in order to uncover the fact that the latter is the indispensable prerequisite of the former, and more fundamental.
