Thermal maturation modeling of Tarim basin based on both methods presented by Waples and by Sweeney and Burnham indicates that paleothermal gradient of this basin in Paleozoic Era is significantly higher than that at present. In the central and northern areas of the basin, paleothermal gradient during Paleozoic Era is 3. 2 ̄ 2.9℃ /100m, and cools down solwly to 2.5℃/100m during Mesozoic Era and rapidly to about 2℃ /100m during Cenozoic Era,and in the eastern part of the basin, paleothermal gradient is much higher than that in the central and northern parts about 3. 8 ̄3.3℃ /100m during Paleozoic Era,and then cools down to 2.3°/100m at present. According to thermal and burial histories of the basin,hydrocarbon generation from Cambrian and Ordovician source rocks mainly occurs before Carboniferous Period and after Early Tertiary.
