In 2003 to 2004, the Zhouyuan Archaeological Team excavated 26 tombs and a horse-and-chariot burial pit among the Western Zhou bronze-casting vestiges west of Zbuangli Village within the Zhouyuan site in Fufeng County, Shaanxi. The tombs are all rectangular earthen pits each with a single or double coffin. Of them M9 is medium in size, while the rest are small-sized. Most of the tombs are furnished with second-tier platforms of mellow soil, and some graves, with waist-pits. In the small-sized tombs, the funeral objects include mainly pottery vessels in the li (tripod)-dou (stemmed vessel)-jar and li-gui(food container)-dou-jar sets, and also shells and stone gui (pointed elongated tablets). Tomb M9 yielded bronzes of the round ding, gui food container, li, yan steamer, zun vase, lei pot, jue tri-legged cup, you swing-handled pot, he pot, jia tripod, knife and ornament; pottery of the li, gui, dou, jar, urn, bu basin, paddle and yu liquid container; and proto-porcelain of the dou. It is the richest in funeral bronzes, good in condition and rather complete in the combination of grave goods among the burials known so far on the Zhouyuan site. The bronze combination of three ding and two gui and the funeral burial of two horse and one chariot provide important data for studying the burial custom and ritual of the early Western Zhou period. The interlacing distribution of tombs and bronze casting remains in the same area as well as the mutual superimposition and intrusion of tombs and other vestiges are of great significance to investigating the status of the tomb-owners and the Western Zhou land system in the Zhouyuan area.
