The publication of Zong Pu's Red Beans has given rise to constant debates about its theme of "revolution is superior to love". The paper, from the perspectives of narrator, protagonist and reader and by means of narrative rhetoric, analyzes the underlying reasons for the deviation of actual effect from the author's intended theme. The theme of "revolution is superior to love" was indeed the author's original intention but, due to the overwhelming impact of politics in that era, was hardly the author's sincere belief. The narrator and protagonist in the novel respectively convey their intention, but the instability of these two identities eventually leads to the author's emotional dissociation. Therefore, the author's improper efforts to state the theme give rise to the indefiniteness of the novel's theme.
