Cerebral vasospasm (CVS), a common complication of subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), is caused by many factors and associated with poor prognosis of SAH. CVS generally occurs 3- 4 days after the initial SAH and peaks at 5-7 days. It may involve the complete arterial system from the circle of Willis up to the distal vessel segments. Advances in our understanding of the pathophysiology of CVS will contribute directly to the prevention of SAH. So how to prevent CVS? Studies have been conducted in animal model and clinical practice to find the answer. This article focuses on recent progress of the prevention of CVS following SAH.
