Lord of the Flies seems to be a simple story, but it inspires lots of interpretations from various perspectives. The depth of this novel owes much to William Golding's superb use of symbolism. This present essay intends to discuss the symbolic meaning of an important image Paint/mask, which used to be often ignored by many scholars. With the development of plot, the paint is no longer a mere concealing mask for Jack's evil. It grows to symbolize the general evil in human nature. This image bears great significance to the understanding of the theme of the novel.
