Objective To investigate the role of the adhesion molecule E-cad and CDd4v6, and the relationship between the expression of E-cad and CDd4v6 and the histopathological grade and lymph nodes metastasis in oral and maxillofacial squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Methods Immunohistochemical method (LSAB) was applied to examine the expression of E-cad and CD44v6 in 54 oral and maxillofacial SCC and 15 non-cancerous tissues. Results E-cad expression was positive in 50.00% of SCC versus in 86.67% of non-cancerous tissues. The positive rate of E-cad in SCC was lower than that in non-cancerous tissues (P〈0.05). Unusual expression of E-cad and CD44v6 was significantly correlated with histopathological grade (P〈0.05). The oral and maxillofacial SCC with low positive E-cad expression (21.43%) metastasized to lymphnodes (P〈0.05). It was implied through the present study that there was a significant positive correlation between the expression of E-cad and CD44v6 (P〈0.01). Conclusion Decreased E-cad expression might be significantly correlated with histopathological grade and lymph nodes metastasis. Additionally, decreased CDd4v6 expression may be significantly correlated with the tumor histopathological grade. Then, there must be a relationship between the expression of E-cad and CDd4v6 in oral and maxillofacial SCC. Therefore, the combined examination with E-cad and CDd4v6 could be applied as a reference to detect the invasion and metasis of the oral and maxillofacial SCC.
