The existing main tibrary of the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm had become too small and outdated. In 1995 different alternatives within the campus were studied and evaluated for a new Library building. Ultimately it was decided that the old laboratory building from 1917, which is centrally located and which through reconstruction and additions was deemed able to fulfill all requirements for a modern library, was the best choice.
