摘要
在口头程式理论的影响下,惠特曼独辟蹊径,试图重新建立荷马史诗的文学艺术批评取向。他的荷马研究以历史环境和史诗文本为出发点,从史诗整体、文学技巧、英雄人物等多侧面思考荷马的传统,对繁复考据的机械主义实证研究而言是一种纠偏,在20世纪的荷马研究史上具有承上启下的意义。
Influenced by the ＂Oral-Formulaic Theory＂, Cedric H. Whitman strives to reestablish his literary criticism of the Homeric epics. Taking the historical context and the Homeric text as the analytical starting point, his Homer and the Heroic Tradition explores the Homeric tradition from multiple perspectives （the unity of the epics, the literary devices, and the heroic characters）. His research, which has a pivotal role in the twentieth-century Homeric scholarship, not only responds to the ＂Oral-Formulaic Theory＂, but also rectifies its positivistic and mechanistic orientations.
