The leaders and participants of Aceh separatism movement are Muslims, just like the hulk of Indonesians. This aspect is distinctly different from the regional rebellions in other Southeast Asian countries. Investigating the history of Aceh separatism movement, the author holds that the coordination between the leaders and the masses of the people promotes its development; meanwhile, its roots are cultural difference between Aceh Muslims and nonnative Muslims composed mainly of Javanese and the repressive policy taken by the Indonesian government.
