Phthalate esters (PAEs) are harmful substances since they may disrupt human body's endocrine system's functions. Excessive use of phthalate esters in industrial applications, mainly as plasticizers, has raised serious concern about their adverse health effects and/or damage to the environment. This article presents an overview of distribution and transformation of PAEs in the aqueous environment, including the sources and major transformation mechanisms: hydrolysis, photodegradation, adsorption, and biodegradation. There is a need for more research on transformation of PAEs and the intermediate products, contribution of individual degradation mechanisms to the observed removal, and effects of colloidal matters on adsorption of PAEs in lab and natural waters.
