Abstract The author overviews the current development of environmental indicators and concerns about the design of the indicators in the context of sustainable development. It focus on the criteria for selecting the indicators based on the conceptual framework of Pressure-State-Responds (PSR ). Further discusses anotherset of indicators should be established other than PSR which is the evaluation indicators, to apply on the assessment of the interaction of the PSR, the significant of the indicators to, and state and degree of the sustainable development.
