The eastbound spread of the culture of the Dongyi people (eastern tribes) in ancient China contributed to the mainstream of the ancient Japanese culture, while its westbound movement left some traces in the cultures of the Yi and Bai ethnic groups in Yunnan. This accounts for the similarities in customs found among both the early Japanese and the present Yi and Bai people. This paper looks into the euhural origin of the above-mentioned peoples by examining their fire rituals so as to add further evidences to the existence of such phenomenon.
