Amateur performers and box offices came into being when Beijing opera appeared in Shanghai. There were over 100 box offices in Shanghai from 1920s to 1940s. The middle-class people were the main source of amateur performers. Box office was a place of entertainment for these people, where they enjoyed performance, formed fellowship, exchanged information and discussed the opera. From the box office, we can perceive the other side of modern Shanghai, even those details that have been ignored.
